Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday sought a two-month extension for the Aadhaar-linked cooking gas subsidy programme in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts, where it was to come into effect from February 15.
The government was forced to seek the deferment of the move as the Aadhaar enrolment process in these two districts has turned into a big fiasco with thousands of people thronging a handful of enrolment centres. People had turned panicky after the oil companies said LPG cylinders would be supplied at subsidised rates from February 15 to only those who have the Aadhaar number.
The state government said it would set up 200 more enrollment centres to handle the public rush. It has also appealed to the people not to worry about the deadline as the Centre was about to agree to its request for postponement of the scheme in the two districts.
