Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Sunday laid the foundation for the 600 Mw Singareni coal-based power plant at Pegadapalli village in Adilabad. The plant will involve an investment of Rs 2,700 crore.

The chief minister today also launched the first phase of 700 Mw of the proposed 2,100 Mw gas-based power project, promoted by APGenco, at Nedunur in Karimnagar.

Both the projects are expected be operational by July 2013.

The power plants in backward Adilabad and Karimnagar would spur economic growth and help set up other industries, Rosaiah said.

For the Singareni project, there would be no budgetary support from the government. The investment would be totally met by APGenco from internal resources and loans.

The plant would source 2.39 million tonne coal per annum from the Sreerampur opencast project having reserves of 63 million tonne, which would  meet the requirement for about 25 years.

Of the 600 Mw, about 150 Mw would be used for internal consumption and the balance would be for the state grid.
