Apex Court Rejects Electoral Reforms Law

The Supreme Court today struck down the recent amendment to the election law and reiterated that candidates must declare their criminal antecedents, assets and liabilities at the time of filing their nomination papers.

Parliament had passed the amendment to the Representation of the People Act last year to bypass an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court which insisted on the right of information of the voter to know the background of the candidates.

That amendment was quas-hed today and the political parties which unanimously supported the amendment have suffered a loss of face.
