The Supreme Court today stayed the Delhi High Court judgment, which had asked the Centre to distinguish between vegetarian and non-vegetarian medicines with suitable markings on the packages.
The high court order was meant to protect the sensitivity of vegetarians, who form a majority in the country.
In November, the high court had directed that medicines, cosmetics and soaps, containing only vegetarian ingredients, should be marked with a green circle within a square on their packages.

Those containing animal ingredients should carry a similar mark in red. The petition in the high court was moved by Ozair Husain, who sought the order to warn vegetarians against consuming animal ingredients.
Soap manufacturers had earlier approached the Supreme Court and it had issued notices to the parties concerned.
