The slew of sops and concessions offered to industries in the North East under the new industrial policy seems to have broken the initial inhibition of industries regarding investing there.

Shri Ambika Iron Industries aka SAII Motors of Kolkata, with Chinese collaboration, will set up the North East's first-ever automobile plant in Assam. The upcoming plant would be a joint venture between SAII motors and Guanzhou Panyo Haojin Motor Cycle Company of China and would come up at the newly built Industrial Growth Centre at Chhaygaon in Assam's Kamrup district.

The company is expected to pump in around Rs 100 crore in the next two years for manufacturing plant. Once the unit becomes operational, it would be able to roll out around 2.5 lakh two wheelers, 12 thousand tractors and an equal number of power tillers annually.

A few other industrial houses from outside Assam and abroad have also completed surveys on setting up plants in Assam in recent past.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today formally inaugurated the newly constructed centre at Chhaygaon. The centre is spread over 857 bighas of land, of which 400 bighas have now been developed in the first phase at an estimated cost of Rs 16.14 crore. The remaining portion would be developed in the second phase.
