Led by APCC president Tarun Gogoi, the delegation also met several central leaders opposing the repeal of the IMDT Act, promised by Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda during his recent visit to Assam. Opposing a fresh revision of electoral rolls, the APCC memorandum said an intensive revision had already been carried out in 1994, and the final rolls had been published in 1995. It said a fresh revision was not necessary since lakhs of voters had already satisfied quasi-judicial authorities about their identity, and their names had been included in the rolls. If this revision is done again, lakhs of genuine voters would be subjected to the same process of verification before the registering authorities over and over again. This issue has already been decided and their names have been included in the voters list, the memorandum said.
If the revision is to be held, the APCC said voters whose identity has already been decided upon, should be exempted from further questioning.
