Assam floods displace 10 lakh

With water levels of most of the major rivers showing a rising trend in the state, the flood situation in Assam remains critical.

More than 10 lakh people have been displaced across the state due to floods and another 15 have been left dead. The road communication to Assam and rest of North East was cut off today after river Puthimari breached national highway 31 near Rangiya in Kamrup district.

River Puthimari breached four embankments in Kamrup district before submerging the national highway. More than 1,346 villages in 16 districts, covering a land area of about 2,69,609 hectares have been affected with due to floods.

 

The worst hit districts are Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Nogaon, Dibrugarh. River Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level in Dibrugarh, Neamatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri and above danger level in Guwahati and Goalpara.

More than half of the world famous Kaziranga National Park has been inundated by flood waters with wild animals fleeing to highlands. Flood waters are also posing a serious threat to the existence of the river island Majuli, the seat of Vaishnavaite culture in the state.

Army has been deployed in the state to assist relief operations and helicopters have been pressed into service to reach to people in affected places.
