The Orissa legislative assembly on Satruday unanimously adopted a resolution to change the name of the state from Orissa to Odisha and that of the state language from Oriya to Odia. This is being done as per the clauses of the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2009 prepared by the Centre for effecting the change in names of the state and its language.

The state legislative assembly on August 28 last year had adopted a resolution seeking the amendment and had forwarded it to the Centre to pass a Bill in the Parliament. President Pratibha Patil had recently referred the Orissa (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2009 to the state assembly for its views.
