A day after Australian premier John Howard ruled out an apology to Dr Mohammad Haneef, who was detained without charges for his alleged role in the foiled terror attacks in the UK, the doctor insisted that the country down Under should apologise to the "peace loving nation" of India.

"I do not expect any apology from the Australian authorities or the prime minister. But Australia should apologise to the peace loving citizens of India," he said addressing the media here on Monday.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Ali, an Indian doctor who worked with Haneef at the Australian hospital and was interrogated by the police in connection with the terror plot earlier this month, has been suspended.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman said Ali would remain suspended until the probe against him was complete.
