In Kolkata, as many as 16 long-distance and EMU trains were cancelled. According to a release issued by the Eastern Railway, the 16 trains included the Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express, Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express, Udyan Abha Toofan Express, Howrah-Dehra doon Express, Kanchunjungha Express and Ananya Express.

Around 23 flights of various airlines took off for their destinations before the bandh. However, during the bandh period, airlines suspended flights from Kolkata. Air India's flight to Kathmandu was also cancelled.

Shops, multiplexes, markets and educational institutions remained closed in Kolkata, which also witnessed heavy rains early in the day.

In Kerala, normal life was disrupted today due to the day-long strike called separately by the ruling LDF and BJP to protest against the fuel price hike.

Public and commercial vehicles were off the roads and many shops and business establishments were closed. Educational institutions remained closed while government offices registered thin attendance.

The protest call evoked no response in the IT sector and its impact on the industries was also minimal.

In Tripura, normal life was paralysed due to the bandh called by the ruling Left Front.

None of the offices in the state registered any attendance. Shops and markets were closed and vehicles did not ply on the roads.

Schools and colleges were closed and Tripura University cancelled the examinations scheduled today. No flights took off or landed at the Agartala airport, official sources said.

Meanwhile, train services of East Coast Railway (ECoR) were disrupted owing to the bandh, reports from Bhubaneswar said.

The CPI (M) activists obstructed tracks, thereby affecting movement of trains at many stations.
