The shutdown called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising representatives of various political parties and pro Telangana organisations on Thursday evoked partial response and, barring a few untoward incidents, passed off peacefully.
The Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation suspended its services in Telangana districts for the second consecutive day but restored partially in the state capital and a few other places. Educational institutions, however, remained closed across the region.
Police stated that 241 people, including 134 students, were taken into custody. In all, agitational programmes including dharnas, rasta rokos and rallies were held in 522 places.
Hectic political activity was witnessed in various camps as the January 28 deadline, set by JAC for the Centre to announce the time frame for formation of Telangana state, drew closer.
Ministers and Congress legislators from the Telangana region are planning to go to Delhi on January 26 to mount pressure on the Centre.
JAC convener, M Kodandaram, said that there was no change in the deadline.
