Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan today inaugurated the second phase of Mumbai's iconic structure -- Northern carriage way of Bandra-Worli sea link.
With all four lanes stretching up to 4 kilometres, the sealink will connect Bandra to Worli in seven minutes at a speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour.
Started in 1999, the four-kilometre sea link has been built at a total cost of Rs 1,634-crore. First phase of the project was inaugurated last year.
The sealink project was overseen by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and was developed by Hindustan Construction Company.
Inaugurating the second phase of the project, the chief minister said that with the all four lines open, the sealink is expected to help de-congest the city's traffic.
According to the project proposal, the next phase of the project, which will be undertaken by Reliance-led consortium, will extend to Haji Ali in South Mumbai. The work is expected to start by the end of this year.
Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan was also present at the inaugural function.
