One person died of suffocation in a fire at Bangalore airport on Wednesday morning, disrupting incoming and outbound flights for about four hours, officials said.

The fire broke out in the kitchen of a restaurant at the airport around 2.30 am. Fifty nine of the 60 employees managed to escape before it was extinguished, Bangalore Airport officials said.

"The restaurant employee, who was found unconscious, was taken to the hospital where he died," they said.

Flight operations, suspended due to the smoke in the terminal, were resumed around 8 am. About six flights were delayed, officials said.

Fire brigade sources said seven fire tenders, including six of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, were pressed into service, to put out the fire.
