Basic Telephony Rentals Up For Companies

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Friday slashed the number of free calls that can be made by urban commercial subscribers per month from 60 to 30, and similarly for rural commercial subscribers from 75 to 45. The order will come into effect from April 1.

Trai also hiked rentals for urban commercial users between 22 per cent and 33 per cent depending upon the local exchange capacity. Rentals for rural commercial users have been left untouched at Rs 310 a month. Trai has also not changed the tariff for non-commercial users.

The hike in tariffs means that Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd--which has 4.3 million subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai, half of which are estimated to be commercial lines
