The West Bengal government has instructed the district administration to convene an all-party meeting to take stock of the situation in Nandigram in the wake of fresh violence in the area yesterday.

Home Secretary P R Roy said the situation in the area remained tense since yesterday because of fresh violence.

He said the timely intervention by the police helped in controlling the situation, which could have turned much more serious. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee reviewed the situation in Nandigram at a high-level meeting at Writers' Building.

Chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb and Director General of Police A B Bhora were also present at the meeting.

Roy said, the state government had informed the Centre of the prevailing situation at Nandigram.

He informed that the police had been asked to be more restrained since the government did not want a repeat of the March 14 incident. "Police has been instructed to act with caution at Nandigram in east Midnapore district," he said.
