With prices of essential commodities easing a little, fresh crops of Bengal gram and red gram have started arriving at the market. While the best quality Bengal gram is fetching Rs 2,100 per quintal, other types are being sold at Rs 1,800 per quintal.
Fresh Bengal gram is expected to be around 1.5 million quintal and the backlog stock would be around 400,000 quintal, said Lakshinarayana of Bhaskar Trading here. Bengal gram is grown in Guntur and Prakasam districts and Guntakal, Nandyal Nandikotkur and Allagadda in Kurnool district.
Traders paid farmers up to Rs 2,700 per quintal a few days ago. The price then crashed to Rs 2,100. Farmers said they would not sell the crop if the price fell below Rs 1,800 per quintal.
In the case of red gram, the new crop, especially from Maharashtra and Karnataka, has just arrived though in small quantity. The red gram this year is expected to be about 50 per cent of last year’s crop. While the redgram dal is available at Rs 4,300 per quintal, red gram is receiving between Rs 2,600-3,200.
