Details of workers with qualification of class eight and above who have been trained in some vocation under any state government schemes and were registered with the Employment Exchange will be available on the website, informed Anadi Sahu, minister of labour, West Bengal.

The state government had increased the net budget for skills development schemes to Rs30 crore in this financial year from Rs5 crore last year, Sahu said.

Around 280 subjects or vocations were chosen and around 500 public and private institutions were shortlisted.

The state government would bear 50 per cent cost for the training that included short-term courses in spoken english, computer hardware, plumbing and electrical repairing among other vocations.

Starting from September last year, the state government had trained around 5000 youths, and had plans of training at least 50,000 this year, the minister claimed. With the upcoming industries in the state, there was a huge demand for skilled labourers and blue-collar workers.

Instead of scouting for talent through a long drawn out process, corporates like the Tata Motors could use the information in the website, he explained.

While updating the database will be a continuous process, it will take around another three to four months before the existing names could be uploaded.

The labour minister added that the department was looking at tying up with the various chambers of commerce and was already in talks with the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BNCCI) for the conducting workshops on entrepreneurship in the districts.

This apart, the directorate was also working on revising the list of jobseekers registered with the exchange.

The exercise had already trimmed the list from 77 lakh to 55 lakh now.

More names were expected to be eliminated as many who had registered in the past had crossed the age limit for getting government jobs, Sahu alleged.

Many of them had joined private enterprises or taken up other activity, he added.

The department could send individual letters to each registered person to assess the correct number of eligible job seekers in the state.
