Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) has bagged two export orders worth Rs 900 crore from Oman. The state-owned power equipment major has got the contracts for setting up of gas-based power plants in Oman.

The two power projects on a turnkey basis are for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a company with majority stake owned by the Oman government and the rest with Royal Dutch Shell, Partex and Total.

The orders included setting up of two gas turbine-based projects with 2x126 Mw power plant at Mukhaizna and 1x126 Mw power plant at Qam Alam, said a Bhel release. It added that gas turbines to be installed for PDO are of the largest unit rating.

The scope of the project includes design, supply, civil construction and commissioning of these projects, which are to be completed in 23-months' time.

With the order, Bhel-supplied sets will account for 40 per cent of PDO's installed generating capacity. This is the third gas turbine-based power project order from PDO.

It came after the successful completion of the 140 Mw gas turbine-based Qan Alam power project in 2004 and 90 Mw gas turbine-based Hubara power project for PDO in 2000, the release said.

This is the sixth power project being put up by BHEL in Oman. Apart from this, the company is also currently executing three orders for their compressors in Oman. It has, so far, secured orders close to Rs 1,600 crore from PDO over the last seven years.
