The BJP today expressed concern over what it called the shedding of Nepal's Hindu character. These concerns were expressed by BJP President Rajnath Singh as he paid a courtesy call on Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

The BJP also favoured continuation of constitutional monarchy there, insisting it was an "integral part" of the tradition of Nepal.

Singh also said that the Maoist rebels should contest elections and play a positive role in that country's rebuilding.

"We have expressed our concerns to the Nepal Prime Minister about their decision to become a secular nation. We have requested him to ensure that the unique cultural and social identity of Nepal must be preserved," Singh said.

The Nepalese Parliament, which was restored in April after revival of democracy in the country, had passed a resolution declaring Nepal a secular country.

Asked about BJP's views on constitutional monarchy in Nepal, the party chief said that "along with the growth of democracy in Nepal, constitutional monarchy should be continued there as it is an integral part of the tradition and culture of that country."

Asking the Maoists to return to the mainstream, he said, "They must give up arms and join the ongoing democratic process."

"I told the prime minister that BJP would welcome if the Maoists contest elections and play a positive role in Nepal's rebuilding," he said.
