Accusing Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan of indulging in "electoral malpractices", the BJP today said it will move the Election Commission to demand a probe into the issue.

"The Maharashtra Chief Minister has provided incorrect details of his election expenditure to the EC. He had spent more than what is allowed and submitted wrong details of his expenditure to the EC," BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here.

Naqvi said he would lead a BJP delegation to the EC today. Party MP and spokesperson Prakash Javadekar would also be a part of the delegation.

He said the party would demand a "high level" probe into the issue. "We would demand the EC to lodge a case against Chavan for electoral malpractices," he added.

Quoting media reports, the BJP leader said Chavan managed full page coverage in several newspapers though he had spent a little over Rs 5,000 on print advertisement as per the records submitted to the returning officer.

The Chief Minister won the Bhokar assembly seat of Maharashtra’s Nanded district.
