Blizzard delays India-US flights

Bs ReporterAgencies Mumbai/ Delhi
Flights from India to the US were delayed on Friday as the New York and Newark airports were hit by a ferocious snowstorm.

According to a Delhi airport official: “Jet Airways flights, which go via Brussels from Mumbai, were delayed by 30 minutes.” Two flights of Air India to New York and Newark were also delayed. The flights depart at around 1.30 am in the morning from Delhi and Mumbai respectively. The flight to Newark, however, departed at 8.30 am and New York flights went at 11.50 am because of storm related delay.

“As the New York and Newark airports have been opened, we will be flying as per schedule today,” an Air India official said.

Sources said two flights of the US-based United Airlines from India to the US were cancelled due to the blizzard. “Two United flights, one each from Mumbai and Delhi to Newark, were cancelled on Friday night and Saturday morning. We have 90 per cent plus loads otherwise. The passengers booked for Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Denver and other cities beyond Newark were accommodated on partner airlines,” one United official said.

Said Jay Bhatia, chairman, western region, Travel Agents Association of India: "As of now, we have not got information from Mumbai about the cancellations or delays of the flights."

The storm caused cancellation of at least 2,000 US flights. United Continental Holdings Inc, Delta Airlines Inc, AMR Corps American Airlines and other carriers issued travel waivers that allowed passengers to change their plan without any penalty.
