Navbharat Seeds, the Ahmedabad-based company which sold the Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) cotton seeds to farmers in Gujarat, may have to shell out over Rs 11 crore as compensation. With almost 5,000 acres of Bt cotton set to be destroyed, the compensation could go up substantially if it has to include cost of inputs like fertilisers and pesticides.
According to K Ghosh, member of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) and advisor in the department of biotechnology (DBT), the compensation would be borne by the
