Bumper wheat crop, farmers still losing out

Image

The bumper crop of wheat across India this season is unlikely to improve the plight of farmers in Punjab .

While farmers in other states are getting above Rs 1,000 per quintal (100 kg)for the wheat crop, the Punjab farmers are getting only the reserve price (Rs 850 per quintal).

The main reason for this has been that farmers are unwilling to be realistic about the market and also the fact that the leaders of farmers' organisations have been submitting statements to seek remuneration of about Rs 1,140 per quintal.
