Bus strike puts Kolkata almost still

Bus strike called by the Left Front Trade union body CITU, shutdown most of the private transport in Kolkata today. Over a half million commuters mostly use buses to travel everyday.

Handful of state-owned government buses and a few operated by the opposition Trinamool Congress trade union were moving.

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattarcharjee had opposed strikes at a FICCI meet earlier this year and had faced a reprimand from his party for doing so. This time the state had not taken any visual steps to oppose the strike by the Left trade union.

CITU teams also blocked roads at various places in Kolkata and the state.
