Passenger buses will remain off the road in most of the routes for next couple of days as the state authorities have started acquiring the vehicles for the civic body elections.

Polling for the urban bodies in Raipur district will be held on December 23. Even as the authorities are preparing to keep final touches to the preparation, acquisition of buses has also started.

Sources in the district administration said that as of now 130 buses had been acquired for election work. The vehicles would be used to ferry the polling parties and despatch election materials to different booths.

Besides passenger, school buses have also been acquired by the authorities. Most of the schools in the state capital have declared holiday for next three days as vehicles shall not be available to bring the students.

The commuters will, however, face problem. Sources said that buses departing from the capital city did not start for the destination today even as hundreds of passengers were stranded.

Besides the Naxal-infested pocket of Bastar, a major part of interior Chhattisgarh does not have rail connectivity and commuters have to depend on buses. The officials are claiming that they are ensuring that the passengers do not face any problem.
