Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai today briefed Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) about his report on the allocation of 2G spectrum.

His report on a presumptive loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore in the allocation had created a storm in Parliament and outside. The PAC, headed by BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, is examining the controversial allocation of 2G radiowaves and Rai apprised the committee of how the audit looked into the issue.

The CAG report had proved to be quite an ammunition for the Opposition, including the BJP and Left parties, to target the government and it had been insisting that only a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) could unearth the truth in what they alleged was the “biggest scam in independent India”.

The demand for JPC had led to a stalemate in Parliament, with the government stoutly resisting Opposition’s demand.

A decision to ask Rai to appear before the powerful PAC was taken during its earlier meeting this month. The committee has already invited views and suggestions on the 2G spectrum allocation.
