Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) to focus on the government’s various social sector development programmes and the UN’s Millennium Development Goals to evaluate utilization of funds allotted for the schemes. Mukherjee, who was addressing the 25th Conference of Accountants General in New Delhi on Friday, also asked the CAG to identify ways on how “the expenditure on subsidies can be contained, without adversely affecting the targeted beneficiaries of such subsidies”.
Highlighting the government’s initiative to develop the ailing infrastructure of the country, Mukherjee asked CAG to consider infrastructure development as one of the “thrust areas” for its audit activities.
