Four new cases of swine flu were reported in Canada, bringing the total number of people infected with the virus nationally to 285.

Western Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces each confirmed two new cases in laboratory tests, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement yesterday.

An Alberta woman in her 30s died from possible swine flu complications late last month, officials announced on Friday. A young girl was hospitalised with severe symptoms last week in Alberta, but is recovering.

All of the other Canadian cases have been mild, said officials.

To date, only Canada's northern territories and island Newfoundland province in the North Atlantic Ocean have not had infections.

In westernmost British Columbia there are now 79 confirmed cases, as well as 48 in Alberta, four in Saskatchewan, one in Manitoba, 76 in Ontario, 16 in Quebec, two in New Brunwick, 56 in Nova Scotia, and three on Prince Edward Island.
