Capital dredging at Haldia to be over by 2011: Vasan

The Shipping Ministry today said capital dredging, to improve navigability and drought situation at Haldia Dock Complex would be completed by 2011.

"Capital dredging at Haldia will be completed by 2011," Shipping Minister G K Vasan said. He said the Centre had earmarked Rs 995 crore for the cost involved in the purpose.

Capital dredging involves creation of new or improved facilities such as a harbour basin, a deeper navigation channel, a lake, or an area for industrial or residential purposes.

Under the National Maritime Development Programme, a total of 40 projects were proposed to be taken up at Kolkata Port and Haldia dock involving a total investment of Rs 6,500 crore.

 

"As a result of this, total capacity addition will be 13.20 million tonnes in the two ports," Vasan told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar at Bharat Chamber of Commerce here.
