The cargo operations at the Mumbai airport was severely affected today after around 9,000 cargo workers went on a flash strike, protesting lack of basic amenities, infrastructure and other issues.

"Around 9,000 contract cargo workers, belonging to multiple cargo handling agencies at the Mumbai airport, are on flash strike to protest lack of basic amenities and other issues," airport sources told PTI here.

The strike has hampered cargo operations at the airport which has almost come to a standstill.

Private developer Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) operates the airport and is responsible for providing these amenities at the cargo terminal, they said.

Around 600 tonnes of cargo is exported and another 650 tonnes is imported at the Mumbai International airport which fetches a duty collection of 25 crores, the sources added.

MIAL spokesperson was not available for comment despite repeated calls.
