The global system for mobile (GSM) technology-based cellular players, like Bharti, have approached the government for the allocation of additional spectrum required to offer third generation (3G) mobile services.

"We have approached the ministry of communications to allocate us spectrum in the 1900 Mhz required to implement 3G mobile services as per the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) norms," an industry source told Business Standard.

The operators are planning to offer this service in selected metro circles in the initial phase. The ITU has specified a standard norm, called "IMT-2000 technology family", to deliver 3G services. It identified a "core band" of 1920-1980 Mhz paired with 2110-2170 Mhz for terrestrial 3G services.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India had released a consultation paper on spectrum related issues on May 31, 2004.

The regulator will have an open-house to get comments from the various stake holders in the first week of August, after which, it is expected to come out with final recommendations.

Better connectivity
  • At present, GSM mobile service providers are operating in the 900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz radio frequency, whereas the CDMA-based mobile service providers are providing services in the 800 Mhz frequency
  • GSM players ask for the allocation of additional spectrum of 1900 Mhz required to offer 3G mobile services
