In a bid to check pollution in river Ganga in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad district, the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) has sanctioned a Rs 315.34 crore scheme, a senior official said here today.

"The NGRBA has sanctioned an ambitious scheme of Rs 315.34 crore to check pollution in river Ganga in Allahabad," Principal Secretary Urban Development Alok Ranjan said.

He said while 70 per cent of scheme cost will be borne by the Centre, the rest will be the state's contribution.

"Of the total amount, the Centre will release Rs 10 crore in the current fiscal as first installment," he said.

The principal secretary said at present Allahabad city generates nearly 228 MLD sewerage, of which only 39 per cent is treated.

"Thus nearly 61 per cent of the sewerage are being disposed off in the river," he said.
