This was revealed by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil during a high-level consultations he held on defusing the Gujjar agitation, which today claimed two more lives. Patil told the meeting that Raje's letter to the prime minister had been sent to the law ministry for its opinion.

Patil was briefed by senior officials of the tribal affairs and law ministries, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar and Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, sources said.

The Centre has also sought views of states having sizeable Gujjar population on the demand to include them into the scheduled tribes category.

Today's meeting was held in the backdrop of the Gujjar agitation taking a violent turn in Rajasthan and affecting areas in neighbouring Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region.
