Unique Identification Authority of India Chairman Nandan Nilekani has said that the government would be rolling out first set of Unique Identification Cards (UIDs) by next 12 to 18 months.

The cards, the first set of which would be introduced by next 12-18 months, would be helpful in nation's security and identifying beneficiaries of various government sponsored schemes, Nilekani said while making a video presentation on UIDs at the Mantralaya here last evening.

Registrars would be appointed to look after the preparations and implementation of the scheme for the cards at state level, he said.
