Centre To Set Up Earth Station In Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated efforts to beef up the telecommunications infrastructure in the state.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of Tamilnadu Institute for Information Technology (Tanitec), Union secretary for electronics Ravindra Gupta said an independent earth station would be set up in Chennai.

Smaller facilities would also be set up in other important centres of the state, he added. A smaller earth station is planned in Coimbatore and a node with fibre-optic connectivity from Thiruvananthapuram will be provided in Madurai.

The telecom department is also planning a fibre-optic backbone that will stretch all across the state.

About 74,000 km of optic fibre cables have already been laid,the electronics secretary of Tanitec said.

 

Speaking at the inauguration, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said Tanitec had all the makings of a futuristic university.
