The Union Power Ministry is working out a deal with four compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) manufacturers to make available these energy-efficient lamps at Rs 20 across the country.

The step is being taken as part of the 'demand side management' (DSM) approach being adopted in the sector of energy utilisation and conservation.

The CFLs, presently available in a price range of Rs 150 to Rs 300 in Indian market might face a heavy price-cut with the initiative from the Power Ministry. Union Minister of Power Sushilkumar Shinde at the inauguration of a workshop on "Developing DSM Roadmap for India" told reporters.

"The CFLs are energy-efficient and should replace the traditional bulbs. The only problem in promoting CFLs is the heavy cost. The ministry is all set to take a decision to provide CFLs in a price range of Rs 20 and Rs 25 in near future," Shinde stated.

The ministry has identified four Indian CFL manufacturers. "Our talks with these manufacturers are in their final stages. We plan to introduce CFLs at lower prices in near future," Shinde stated. He said efforts were on to cut prices of solar equipment as well.
