Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana has been declared the "greenest city" of the country. Of the union territory's total 114 sq km area, 35% is under forest and tree cover, which is the highest among all cities, according to an union territory administration report. A total of 22.22 lakh saplings have been planted in the last 15 years by different departments of the Chandigarh administration, the report said. The massive aforestation activities undertaken by the administration and other organizations have resulted in a sharp increase in the green cover of Chandigarh and hence it has become a national leader,an official spokesman said. |
