Chandigarh and its surrounding areas including Mohali in Punjab, Panchkula in Haryana, and the Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh belt in Himachal Pradesh are expected to get the city gas distribution system by 2011.
Speaking to Business Standard here recently, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board chairman L Mansingh said the board had already invited bids for gas distribution in seven more cities. These include Ghaziabad, Allahabad and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, Shehdol in Madhya Pradesh, Rajahmundry and Yanam in Andhra Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
The proposed project, is likely to attract Rs 500-600 crore for each city.
“The PNGRB has invited bids for gas distribution in seven more cities including Chandigarh. The last date for submitting the bids is June 25 this year and it is expected that within 2 months the winner will be announced,” he said.

He said private players were setting up city gas projects in six cities — Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, Kota (Rajasthan), Devas (Madhya Pradesh), Mathur and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, and Sonepat in Haryana.
In the third phase, the regulatory is also planning to cover cities like Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Mandi Gobindgarh in Punjab, Mansingh said.
