Days ahead of its annual general meeting (AGM),  the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), announced that Chandrajit Banerjee, currently deputy director general, will be the appointed director general this May. Banerjee succeeds Shamsher S Mehta who was the director general from 2006.

The two-day AGM is scheduled for April 29-30.

Banerjee has been associated with CII for over 20 years now and has worked on policy issues, various sectors, events and internal staff functions of the association. He has also served as the head of state and regional offices of CII.

"I am overwhelmed with the trust CII has shown on me. These are the best of times in India and, yet, the most challenging. I shall work with the outstanding CII team to support India's high growth and inclusive development," Banerjee said.

"CII assessed both external and internal candidates and found Banerjee as the most suitable," Sunil Mittal, president, CII, said in a statement.
