Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala yesterday accused Congress leaders of opposing early completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and said they were "scared" of going to the people for the March Assembly elections.

The chief minister alleged that the main opposition Congress leaders had always opposed the moves aimed at ensuring early completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal.

"The Supreme Court has also dismissed revision petition of the Punjab government in the case of Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal. The leaders of the Congress, having justified the unilateral stand taken by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link issue, are now hesitant in going to the people to seek their votes for the ensuing Assembly elections," he said.

The victory of the opposition parties' candidates in the last Lok Sabha elections was just a "matter of chance", he said after inaugurating a 66 kv sub-station near here.

Out of the ten parliamentary seats in the state, main opposition Congress had bagged nine while the Sonepat was retained by the BJP.

Earlier Chautala addressed a public rally after inaugurating the sub-station constructed at a cost of Rs 4.48 crore, Chautala said that after December 31 this year Haryana would become the first power cut free state in the country and the consumers would get uninterrupted supply of power from the new year.
