The desire to check tax evasion has lost almost total relevance in the context of budget-making. The budgets for the past few years had almost nothing to say in this regard. Efforts are now more concentrated in going about small fishing by bringing them within the tax net through schemes like one-by-six and get meagre revenues from them leaving big evaders to manage their affairs by dodging the tax department.
