The Chennai Corporation is looking at generating electricity from garbage, said local administration minister KP Munusamy.
Speaking in the Assembly, he said necessary steps were being taken to use scientific methods to handle garbage generated in corporation, municipality and town panchayat areas.
“We are also planning a scheme, which would enable generation of electricity from garbage in the limits of Chennai Corporation. If it succeeds, we will extend it to municipalities,” he said. Three plans were being taken into consideration to handle garbage dumped in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur in the city.
Chennai metropolis generates 4,600 tonne garbage daily of which, 2,500 tonne was being dumped in Perungudi and 2,000 in Kodungaiyur. The government has sanctioned Rs 500 crore to dispose of garbage in Chennai city and Rs 750 crore for other areas, he said.
