Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been invited in the crucial meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Saturday to fine-tune the strategy for the upcoming assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Party president Sonia Gandhi has called this extended CWC meet in Delhi also to discuss the present political situation as the run-up to the forthcoming polls.
As the top leadership is convinced that inflation will be one of the major issues for the elections, Finance Minister will be required to provide important inputs for the party on the government’s measures and the possible price situation for the next few months. Although the Manmohan Singh government is riding high on its success in the field of nuclear energy, after it managed to get the IAEA safeguards and the NSG waiver, a large section of the party believes that inflation will still remain a key issue.
In the CWC, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is likely to appraise the members about the current situation in the civilian nuclear endeavour of the government. While it battles the inflation woes, the Congress wants to highlight the nuclear achievements for the election campaign. The meeting will also discuss the recent report of the A K Antony committee on the election strategy and likely to accept its recommendations.
Apart from the usual CWC members, all the Congress chief ministers and legislative party leaders, heads of the state units, the Parliamentary party office bearers, frontal organisation chiefs will also come at this brainstorming session.
