Union home minister P Chidambaram will take stock of the law and order situation in the Naxalite hit Koraput and Kandhamal districts of Orissa in a two day visit to the state beginning Thursday.

But hours before his visit the red ultras blew up at least three mobile towers and railway stations at Kakirigumma and set afire the official files in the block office at Narayanpatna in Koraput district this morning.

Chidambaram is slated to visit some Naxalite ravaged areas including the Panchabatimali bauxite mines of the National Aluminium Company (Nalco) and the proposed site of the Cobra battalion, near Sunabeda, before holding a review meeting on the law and order situation with the superintendent of police (SP) of Koraput, Rayagaa, Malkanagiri and Nabarangapur district at Koraput.

“We will apprise him of the situation in the area arising due to the unlawful activities of the Left ultras”, said a senior police officer.

The Union Home minister will also visit Kandhamal district on Friday and meet with some of the victims of large-scale communal and ethnic violence in that district following the assassination of senior VHP leader Swami Laxmanand Sarasati on August 23 last year.
