The final 988 households have been evacuated in the township and rural areas as part of the displacement that began in August 2004, state media reported.

Some 850,000 square meters of buildings were also dismantled, official Xinhua news agency said.

The Three Gorges Dam, located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze river, was launched in 1993 with a budget of $22.5 billion.

More than 1.3 million people have been shifted so far to make way for the project.

Critics say the dam, which is meant to alleviate flooding and generate electricity, is causing serious environmental problems but officials deny the claim.
