China Metallurgical Engineering & Project Corporation (CMEPC), a diversified engineering and project group is exploring the possibility of forging collaboration with Odisha’s apex industry chamber, Utkal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI), for setting up an industrial park and a machine shop in the state.

The Chinese company has vertical portfolios in metallurgy, mining, coal and coking, energy and non-ferrous metal. CMEPC’s principal activities are in proven technology, engineering, consultancy, supply, project contracting as well as financial services in the field of geological survey, iron ore mining and beneficiation, pelletization, sintering, coal mining, coal washing, blast furnace, hot rolling, cold rolling, among others.

“A special purpose vehicle of UCCI will forge joint venture with CMEPC for setting up the park and a machine shop. The discussions are at a preliminary stage”, said Ramesh Mohapatra, president of UCCI.

They will also bring Chinese investors and financiers, he added.

The expected investment at the park will be around 20 million dollars (Rs 120 crores) while the investment in the machine shop is pegged at around 10 million dollars.

UCCI has identified land patches around the Kalinga Nagar industrial belt in Jajpur district and Athagarh in Cuttack district for setting up an industrial park.

CMEPC is associated with Tata Steel, Steel Authroity of India and Jindal Group for setting up steel plants. The company takes up projects on the EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) and EPS (engineering , procurement and supervision) basis.

“Our proposal is to bring Chinese companies to Odisha and manufacture in India. The companies will be from sectors like metallurgical, power and mining equipment as the Make in India policy is guided by Indian Government. The machine shop will be a separate shop to make the machines and assemble equipment “, said Sophia Wen, Vice President, CMEPC after meeting with the officials of the UCCI.
