When the expansion is completed, the port would be able to provide parking space for around 1850 cars against the present 850 to 900 cars.
P K Abraham, the traffic manager of ChPT, said that in the next two years ChPT was targeting to expand the parking space allocated for export and import of automobiles to accommodate 5000 units.
Chennai Port Trust exported 8,432 Hyundai cars during the calendar year 2002. For 2003, an ambitious target of 30,000 has been fixed.
Pressure for additional space for parking car is expected to go up as the targets for 2004 and 2005 are fixed at 60,000 cars and 75,000 cars respectively. HMIL is the only automobile manufacture in India to export its cars from Chennai port.
ChPT also handles army vehicles, though in limited quantity.
