The first phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly election starting on a positive note by clocking 62 per cent polling has prompted the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to ready its wish list for the state’s economic development.

The list is in the form of industry expectations from the new government in UP, and makes recommendations to the state’s frontline political parties for inclusion in their agenda -- if they are voted to power.

For sometime now, CII has been in the process of meeting the state leadership of prominent parties in this regard and apprising them of the industry expections. The recommendations pertain to all sectors that have a bearing on industrial and economic development. The include agriculture, food-processing, labour reforms, infrastructure, power, renewable energy, skill development, environment and land reforms.

CII has advocated land reforms for enabling big-ticket investments. It also stressed upon good governance, which would be the fountain-head of making UP a leading state in the country.

The body noted that UP could grow only by giving emphasis on agriculture and allied industries that support the bulk of labour market and account for over 15 per cent of the gross state domestic product.

For skill development, CII has suggested re-energising employment exchanges and boosting the setting up of industrial training institutes in public and private sectors. It noted that UP should strive for skill development to 100 million people in the next 10 years to reap demographic dividend.

CII wants flexibility in deployment of contract labour and promotion of female workforce by amending certain provisions relating to timings. It also advocates lending impetus to contract farming and land leasing contract for at least 10 years.
