B-Trac 2010 Bangalore, a project to address issues of traffic congestion and safety by using latest traffic management technology, will become operational by March 2010, a top police official said.
The five year-programme will cost about Rs 350 crore. For financial year 2007-08 and 2008-09, the government has released Rs 44 crore and Rs 38 crore respectively and for 2009-10, the government has already approved Rs 40 crore for the project which will be implemented by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation, City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters here today.
The project, claimed to be the first such in the country, is aimed at complementing the efforts being made by other agencies to upgrade road infrastructure and efficient mass transportation system.
Highlighting an important component of the project which involves equipping every police officer with ‘blackberry’ for automated enforcement thereby phasing out paper-based notice books, he said “within a month of the implementation of the project, the whole traffic system will be automated”.
