With scenes not witnessed since the disturbances following the Babri Masjid demolition, Kolkata became a war zone today with different groups, including those belonging to a religious group, blocked roads all over the city, fought pitched battles with the police and set fire to vehicles.

The groups demanded justice for Nandigram and also the explusion of Taslima Nasreen, the Bangladeshi author criticised for alleged anti-Islamic writings.

State government sources said if necessary, the army would be called out to enforce curfew by evening or at nightfall.
